IEC 60068 Environmental Testing of Electronics

IEC 60068-2-3 (Damp Heat, Steady State), 60068-2-30 (Damp Heat, Cyclic), and 60068-2-78 (Damp Heat, Long Duration) are the workhorse tests for electronic reliability. PCB assemblies, connectors, sensors, and power supplies must pass 240 or 720 hours at 40°C / 93% RH (or similar variants) with functional testing before and after. Failure modes include ionic corrosion, conductive anodic filament (CAF) growth, and dielectric breakdown. JEDEC MSL Preconditioning for Semiconductor Packages

JEDEC J-STD-020 defines Moisture Sensitivity Levels (MSL) for semiconductor packages. Preconditioning at 30°C / 60% RH for 40 hours (MSL 3) or 60°C / 60% RH for 40 hours (MSL 4) is required before reflow-simulation to qualify a package moisture rating. Semiconductor OSAT and Indian ATMP facilities use humidity chambers for these preconditioning steps. Yarn tenacity, fabric shrinkage, and dimensional stability all depend on textile moisture content, which must be equilibrated in a standard atmosphere before testing.
