Do Dehumidifiers Work in Cold Temperatures?

A technical explanation of how refrigerant and desiccant dehumidifiers perform at low temperatures — the 15°C threshold, coil icing, performance curves, and how to choose the right technology for cold environments in India.

By Ozmist Engineering Team

Why Temperature Affects Refrigerant Dehumidifiers

Refrigerant dehumidifiers remove moisture by cooling air below its dew point — water vapour condenses on the evaporator coil and drains away as liquid. This mechanism has a fundamental physical constraint:

When the evaporator coil surface temperature drops to 0°C, condensed water freezes instead of draining. The ice layer insulates the coil, further reducing heat transfer, lowering the coil temperature further, and accelerating icing. Eventually the coil is completely ice-covered, airflow stops, and the unit extracts no moisture. The thermal overload protection may trip.

The coil surface temperature depends on the refrigerant evaporating pressure, which is determined by the inlet air temperature. At inlet air temperatures below approximately 12–16°C (depending on the specific refrigerant and circuit design), the coil naturally reaches 0°C under normal operating conditions.

The practical threshold: Most refrigerant dehumidifiers are rated for operation at ≥16°C inlet temperature. Below this, extraction rate drops sharply; below 12°C, coil icing typically begins within 15–30 minutes of operation.

A unit rated at 100 L/day at 30°C may only extract 24 L/day at 15°C and essentially nothing below 12°C. If sizing is based on rated capacity and the space is cold, severe underperformance results.

The Defrost Cycle

Many industrial refrigerant dehumidifiers include an automatic defrost cycle — the unit periodically reverses refrigerant flow or switches off the compressor to allow the coil to thaw. This partially extends the operating temperature range:

  • Without defrost: Effective minimum inlet temperature ≈16°C
  • With hot-gas defrost: Effective minimum inlet temperature ≈10–12°C (though at greatly reduced efficiency)
  • With reverse-cycle defrost: Effective minimum inlet temperature ≈8–10°C

Defrost cycles interrupt extraction for 5–20 minutes every 30–90 minutes in cold conditions — reducing effective extraction time. At very low temperatures, the unit may spend more time defrosting than extracting.

Desiccant Dehumidifiers: Cold-Temperature Solution

Desiccant dehumidifiers use a hygroscopic wheel (typically silica gel or molecular sieve) that rotates slowly through a process airstream and a regeneration airstream. The process air gives up moisture to the desiccant; the regeneration heater then drives moisture out of the desiccant into an exhaust stream. There is no refrigerant, no coil, and no condensation in the primary process.

Key advantages in cold conditions:

  • Extraction efficiency does not fall with temperature — in fact, lower temperatures may slightly improve process-side performance as cold air holds less moisture (lower absolute humidity load per unit volume)
  • No coil icing is possible in the process airstream
  • Can achieve very low dewpoints (below -30°C dew point for some units) not achievable with refrigerant technology

Disadvantages:

  • Higher energy consumption at warm temperatures — desiccant regeneration heaters draw 2–3× more energy per litre extracted compared to refrigerant units at 25°C+
  • Higher purchase cost for equivalent rated capacity
  • Regeneration heater adds significant heat to the space (8–15°C temperature rise) — advantageous in cold spaces, problematic in occupied warm spaces
  • Desiccant wheel requires periodic replacement (every 3–5 years typically)

If a refrigerant dehumidifier is underperforming in a cold space:

Signs of coil icing:

  • Unit running but no water in tank or drain
  • Ice visible through vents on the evaporator side (frosted coils)
  • Airflow noticeably reduced (blocked by ice)
  • Unit cycling on/off more frequently than normal

Immediate action:

  1. Turn the unit off and allow it to defrost (30–60 minutes with fans running)
  2. Measure inlet air temperature — if below 16°C, the refrigerant technology is wrong for the space
  3. Check filter — a dirty filter exacerbates icing even at temperatures above the threshold

Long-term fix:

  • If the space is always below 16°C: switch to a desiccant unit
  • If the space is occasionally below 16°C: add heating to raise the space above the threshold before running the dehumidifier, or choose a unit with an extended-range hot-gas defrost rated for lower temperatures

Cities with minimum monthly temperatures below 15°C (Delhi NCR, Kolkata, Pune, Jaipur, Hyderabad, and all hill stations) may experience periods where refrigerant dehumidifiers in outdoor-adjacent or poorly heated spaces underperform or ice up in winter months.

Frequently Asked Questions

My warehouse is 25°C in summer but drops to 14°C in December — which technology should I choose? If the 14°C period is short (1–2 months) and the application is not critical during that period, a refrigerant unit with defrost cycle may be acceptable. If year-round performance is critical, choose a desiccant unit. Alternatively, add space heating to keep the warehouse above 18°C during winter months — this is often more economical than switching technologies.

My dehumidifier is icing in summer — is this a temperature problem? Summer icing is almost never a temperature problem — it indicates a filter blockage (most common), refrigerant undercharge (causing abnormally low evaporator pressure/temperature), or a fan failure. Check the filter first; if clean, call a refrigeration technician to check refrigerant pressure.

Can I add antifreeze to a refrigerant dehumidifier to extend the cold range? No — refrigerant circuits use specific refrigerant fluids (R-410A, R-32, R-407C) that cannot be mixed with antifreeze. There is no field modification to extend the cold range of a refrigerant unit. The solution is either desiccant technology or space heating.

Does a cold basement need a stronger dehumidifier than a warm one? At the same extraction rate, the efficiency of a refrigerant unit is lower in cold conditions. To achieve the same L/day of extraction, you may need a unit with a higher rated capacity (rated at 30°C/80% RH). Use a performance curve or ask the manufacturer for the extraction rate at your specific inlet conditions before selecting the unit size.
